Simply stated, Divorce and Family Law is all Perry and Mike do, and
they enjoy doing it well in order to help people through a tremendously difficult time in their lives.
After 26 years of practicing general law in a large law firm, Perry opted to start his own law office in 2005. Since then, Perry has narrowed his practice to exclusively divorce representation. Perry sought Mike to join Shilts Law Office in 2011 in order to provide all past and future clients the comfort of knowing that all of their family law needs, not just divorce representation, could and would be handled by either Perry or Mike for the indefinite future. Mike is no rookie to the family law arena. Family law has been the primary emphasis of Mike's almost 9 year long legal career.
PERRY SHILTS - EXCLUSIVELY DIVORCE REPRESENTATION
Over his 33 years legal career Perry has received the following honors and recognition:
Perry began practicing law in 1978 in and around the Fort Wayne community. Perry is a Certified Family Law Specialist. Through the years his area of expertise has narrowed, and presently he specializes in the settlement and/or litigation of divorces throughout Northeast Indiana. Perry has also been a Registered Family Law Mediator since 1994. In Perry's divorce representation, he strongly emphasizes the benefits of a well-reasoned settlement (usually time and money). As a consequence of Perry's emphasis in each year since 2007, 80% to 90% of all divorce cases in which Perry represented one of the parties were concluded by settlement. While Perry is very proud of his success in helping parties settle their divorce differences, he also appreciates that sometimes the circumstances, or the positions taken by the other party, necessitate a trial to resolve contested issues. With 33 years of experience, Perry is very familiar with the Courtroom and the preparation required for strong and well-reasoned advocacy.
When asked, "Why would an attorney limit his law practice to just divorce representation?” Perry replied as follows:
My journey as a lawyer started when I was 12 years old and was arguing with my father about something that I thought was not fair or right. My father, who was a pipefitter in a small factory who had graduated from high school but was far wiser than his education suggested, told me to go to college, become a lawyer, change the laws, and help people. From that point on, I knew I was going to be a lawyer. After law school I returned to Fort Wayne and began my law career with Snouffer, Haller and Colvin, a large law firm, where I practiced for the next 26 years. I became more and more involved in the family law area as the years went by. After opening my own law office, I decided to limit my practice to divorce representation for several simple reasons. If I do my job correctly, and help people through their divorce situation, they will be very grateful for my assistance. At the same time, I have found that each new divorce was unique, either because of the people involved or the facts. Every divorce is a multi-piece puzzle that needs to be carefully put together. Each and every day, I have the great pleasure of helping good people through difficult times as together we piece together the puzzle of their past life and/or their future life. As a consequence, I look forward to going to the office every single day, even after 33 years.
