Firm Philosophy

Firm Philosophy

Shilts & Setlak, LLC was founded in 2005, when Attorney Perry Shilts determined that he would break from the large firm in which he was a partner and start his own firm that would exclusively focus on family law. Perry wanted to offer family services in a manner that only a boutique firm can. He believed then, as he does now, that family law cases are best resolved by carefully crafted settlement agreements. Attorney Mike Setlak joined the firm in 2011 and became a partner of the firm in 2015. The corporate structure was adopted in 2016.  Each new addition to the firm joined in Perry’s dedication to provide quality representation in all your family law matters, while never forgetting that a family’s future is at the heart of all family law settlements or litigation. Shilts & Setlak, LLC is proud to be your family law firm, serving Allen, DeKalb, Huntington, Adams, Noble, Steuben, Wells, and Whitley counties.

At Shilts & Setlak, LLC we consider it an honor and privilege to represent clients from all walks of life and we do not discriminate based on race, color, sex, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability, or any other characteristic.

Settlements vs. Litigation

One of the founding principles of Shilts & Setlak, LLC is the understanding that legal disputes within a family can be highly emotional and very adversarial, but no matter how large or small the dispute may be, it is the children who suffer most when there are displays of anger and animosity between parents.  A legal battle between parents may affect children’s emotional well-being and outlook for many years.  It is far better to pursue a low conflict settlement, so that the parties are able to focus on their children and what is in their best interests, both short and long term.  There is no reason why a child cannot thrive after a divorce if regard is given to their best interests.

This is just one of many reasons to strongly attempt settlement of all divorce, custody, parenting time, and support conflicts.  Other reasons, of course, are time, money, and the mental and emotional well-being of our clients and their families. Whether children are involved in a family dispute or not, it is important to remember that a lengthy and aggressive legal battle typically benefits no one except the lawyers.
