I researched thoroughly before selecting a family law attorney to handle my divorce. The two primary sites I found for attorney rankings were www.martindale.com and www.lawyers.com. They allow you to search by specialty, location, and other categories. I found it helpful to search for family law attorneys in the Fort Wayne area, then “open for business” (some are not taking new clients), and finally at least 4 or 5 stars. Then I skimmed through the Peer Reviews, Client Reviews, and Avvo Reviews. I eliminated anyone with negative client reviews and narrowed the list to a few favorites, which included Michael Setlak. Then I looked at their web sites. A firm’s web site sometimes provides good insight into their philosophies and attitudes. That got me down to two candidates. The first person I met with was Mike, and he was the guy I hired. I found a couple of the quotes on his firm’s web site to be especially telling: 1. “It is far better to pursue a low conflict settlement, so that the parties are able to focus on their children and what is in their best interests, both short and long term.” 2. “…a lengthy and aggressive legal battle typically benefits no one except the lawyers.” Both statements are very true, and the second one a bit ironic. :) Mike’s attitudes and actions exemplified his firm’s declared philosophy, and I am happy I chose him to handle my case. No regrets.

Perry is/has represented me in 4 court actions. I felt like he was very prepared and knew what was important to me (not just doing another cookie cutter divorce case). He tailored our requests to my priorities and he was honest when something would be a loser (preparing his client for middle ground). The first court action was successfully mediated out and, in that mediation, he came prepared with a document that ultimately was accepted with a few revisions (the document had my priorities in it). He knew how to negotiate through mediation and used our time when the mediator was in the other room to work on upcoming court items and other things (using my dollars well). I had a very difficult ex-spouse and told him that everything would need to be spelled out or she would try me on every last detail. He did just that and that document has saved me countless fights over 8 years as she attempted to try me on this or that (and I even sent him an email last year on how a weird scenario came up and he'd covered it in the document so that there was no ongoing back and forth fighting (and my appreciation of such)). There was court action prior to the mediation in that case and (while I know that Perry doesn't walk on water/isn't perfect) we won 7 out of 7 questions before the court. The second court action was not mediated out (and of no fault of Perry's as the other side was very difficult and asking for the moon and stars). For court, Perry was up for the task, knew where the other side may go and was prepared for that as well. While I understand that he cannot anticipate every turn, I felt very confident in his representation at all times and felt like he was on point. I've worked with many attorneys, and Perry's work product and attention to detail in submissions to court and legal documents/agreements is the best I've seen. A third court action was very simple because of a pre-nuptial that he drafted. A fourth court action is ongoing and has many intricacies, and he's again up to the challenge. I would highly recommend him and his staff (and have personally on 4 occasions thus far).

I commend this attorney for many reasons. My husband and I had to battle an exhausting road of anguish and disappointment after my children mentioned unacceptable behavior about their biological father. This case was, to put it lightly, emotionally and physically draining. Between the jurisdictional issues, a previous Mediation agreement, DCS involvement, several different therapists, and a multitude of court hearings, this attorney tackled each and every hurdle with confidence. He is assertive when needed, confident, knowledgeable, empathetic, but most importantly, he is informative. He responded to all of my concerns in a timely manner. I researched thoroughly before selecting an attorney. Two primary resources are www.martindale.com and www.lawyers.com. I found it helpful to search for family law attorneys in Fort Wayne, then “open for business”, and finally at least 4 or 5 stars. Then I skimmed thru the Peer, Client, and Avvo Reviews. I eliminated anyone with negative client reviews and narrowed list to a few. Then I looked at their web sites, which sometimes provide good insight into their philosophies and attitudes. That got me down to two candidates. The first person I met with was Mike, and he was the guy I hired. Two quotes on his firm’s web site were telling: 1. “It is far better to pursue a low conflict settlement, so that the parties are able to focus on their children and what is in their best interests, both short and long term.” 2. “…a lengthy and aggressive legal battle typically benefits no one except the lawyers.” Mike’s attitudes and actions exemplified that philosophy. I am happy I chose Mike.

I needed to get this off my chest. My divorce was final just over ten years ago. Perry lead the charge and helped end a difficult time in my life. However, when dividing up the retirement "packages" there were some important details, related to the equality of cash and pensions, that he neglected to have defined properly. Unfortunately, After the divorce was final, I was unable to secure the portion of my ex spouses pension that was intended to balance the funds my spouse received from my 401K. Later, Perry advised me to hire him to work that out. Be careful, make sure your team is considering all the details.....

I checked reviews prior to hiring an attorney to represent us and didn’t come across anything that would lead me to believe I would have a miserable experience by hiring an attorney with this firm.I had an initial meeting to be quoted a price for our case.I was quoted a specific amount for guardianship to be filed and hired an attorney from this firm, paid in full in advance, etc.This was to cover all expenses, including hiring a guardian ad litem to cover my child.My child has many diagnoses that leave him unable to make his own decisions.The initial hearing was set prior to my child’s 18th birthday which I found out ONLY from a document that was mailed to my child from the court.My attorney NEVER told me when we were scheduled for court, EVEN after I sent an email to inquire since I hadn’t heard anything. We ended up in the emergency room on the initial court date and it had to be rescheduled because I didn’t know when he would be discharged. This was communicated to the attorney immediately.The hearing was rescheduled.I was told verbally when the new hearing was and never received anything in writing.I called prior to the hearing to verify and was charged to speak to a paralegal/assistant to find out when we had court.Our court hearing took place and the attorney and GAL had to go back and discuss the case privately with the magistrate.I was awarded temporary guardianship & informed that “this happens all the time”. This was temporary ONLY due to my child not being served. Had the attorney known the statute and/or paid attention to detail, all would have been done on the hearing date because he could have easily had my child served due in his inpatient stay. I then had an additional bill around $450 with everything that occurred to date (and only temporary guardianship).Fast forward to February, there was nothing filed for permanent guardianship so concerned about a gap in guardianship that could cause issues with the unpredictability of our child, I called and asked to speak to a manager.I was told one of the owners would reach out.The next day, I received an email with a new petition to sign and a hearing date which was 15 or so days AFTER expiration of our initial temporary guardianship.At the hearing there was NOT a proposed order drafted so it had to be e-filed (and should have been before the hearing)before the magistrate could sign anything.It was to be submitted on that day along with our notarized oaths.The oaths and proposed order were then submitted but the oaths were not notarized (even though the GAL saw us sign and could have notarized it).I was told by our attorney that he submitted it because he just wanted to get it in instead of waiting. Nice way to cause further delay… Nothing was signed that day because the magistrate’s clerk was out for the week.I called the following Monday and the magistrate was out.Due to the importance of getting this done for upcoming appts, his clerk messaged him and got the order signed.I took off work early and went to the courthouse to get a certified copy of the guardianship on Monday.This could not be issued due to no notarized oaths, an issue that could have been prevented had the attorney known that it is required.I called their office again requesting a manager and was told one of the owners would reach out the following day.I went to get the oaths (emailed to me) notarized and the one listed for me had my husband’s name in one of the three locations where my name was to appear.I had to call and have a corrected copy sent to me so the bank could print it and we could get it notarized.That was done quickly, thanks to Karli. I walked to the courthouse to once and for all get a certified copy of the guardianship only to find out that my attorney also hadn’t filed a Letter of Guardianship which MUST accompany the order signed by the magistrate.Fortunately, the clerk filled it out so I was able to wrap up this six month process doing the majority of the leg work myself.

Terrible representation. No strategy was developed or any of my interest talked about or planned. The only strategy was to give them what they want and get this over with which resulted in many issues. The opposing counsel played my attorney throughout the process. Even fumbled filing documents for lying during testimony. Ran up the bill doing absolutely nothing. I am still having to deal with the results of horrible representation by Ashley Gonzales. I hope no one goes through what she did. No court room ability. The biggest waste of 7k.

Katherine Ridenour was extremely aggressively rude towards me being a potential client. Was there for a consultation which cost $75 for a mere 30 minutes. She never even bothered looking @ any of my evidence for my case. Would never recommend her as an attorney for a father trying to do what's best for his child.
